Minimally invasive spine surgery utilizes a thin telescopic device equipped with a video camera, referred to as an endoscope, which allows spine surgeons to see inside a patient’s body. The endoscope is inserted through small incisions, generally half an inch wide, and the spine surgeon sees exactly what needs to be corrected without the conventional spine surgery complications.

Once a procedure has been completed, the incisions are sealed with sutures and covered with medical tape. The benefit of minimally invasive spine surgery is the healing process. After a few months, the surgical wounds are hardly noticeable, as compared to a traditional spine surgery with a large, noticeable scar.

The tissues between the bones in your neck is called intervertebral discs. The discs are composed of a soft gel-like center and a tough outer lining. The intervertebral disc creates a joint between each of the bones in the spine that allows them to move. When the outer lining that surrounds a disc tears, the soft center can squeeze out through the opening, creating a herniated disc.

As we age, the discs in our spine can lose their flexibility and elasticity. The ligaments surrounding the discs become brittle and are more easily torn. When a herniated disc occurs, it can put pressure on nearby spinal nerves (radiculopathy) or the spinal cord (myelopathy), causing painful symptoms.

A spinal fusion surgery is performed to relieve pressure from the nerve that cause pain. Either the spinal canal has shrunk, or the spine is misaligned, causing the nerves to be pinched. Restoring the alignment of the spine, or the space between vertebrae, will relieve pressure on the nerves. Once that has been done, the spine will be stabilized and fused to prevent further damage.

Am I a Candidate for Spinal Fusion?

Natural spinal discs can deteriorate and become troublesome for any individual, which makes artificial discs a likely solution. Sometimes, though, artificial disc replacement surgery is necessary to maintain spinal stability and alleviate back pain.

Artificial discs are prosthetic devices that mimic natural spinal discs, and are placed between vertebrae in order to preserve mobility and increase spinal stability. Acute disc herniation will likely require non-surgical therapies; when those therapies fail, Dr. Moza may recommend artificial disc replacement via spine surgery.
